Some Photogenic Wildlife: Pronghorn, swift fox, American badger, burrowing owl, American avocet, orchard oriole, lark bunting (Colorado's state bird), ferruginous hawk, loggerhead shrike, mountain plover (a Colorado species of concern). See Photo Album.
Surprises: Toads, frogs, turtles, and ducks can sometimes be found in playa lakes and/or spring-fed ponds. A pelican was photographed on a local playa in 2007.
Festival: Karval Community Alliance sponsors the annual Karval Mountain Plover Festival, which includes education about local wildlife, entertainment, and food.
Accomodations: If you already own a Habitat Stamp, you may camp at the Karval State Wildlife Area. You may discuss other possible options with the landowners.

Photo Trail Requirements: These are working ranches and private residences. You must call ahead to reserve a mutually convenient time for your visit. On the ranches, remember to stay on roads. Leave gates as you find them (open or closed). Leave no trace of your visit. Take nothing from the ranches except your pictures. If landowners modify these rules or make others, please respect their wishes.
